The day before New Year is not the best time to try out a new restaurant right?
Driven by hunger and the need to get out of the house for a bit, my Charming Prince and I headed to Sandton City. We hoped to pamper ourselves and have a leisurely lunch at Il Ritrovo Lounge at the Michelangelo Hotel. After being seated, there was no further service for what seemed like forever, so we left. Bad service must not be tolerated!
We decided to give the new place on the square, The Big Mouth a try. It’s got good reviews and a friend had suggested it a few weeks back. Besides, I like the description of the restaurant found on its website “The Big Mouth is a contemporary take on the classic diner infused with culinary influences and ingredients from around the globe.”
The place was busy, with a nice holiday vibe, and we were quickly seated. It was a pretty Jozi day, with our table overlooking the fountain in the square – great for people watching.
I like the idea of small plates, tapas, tasting menus – there’s just something enticing about having lots of tiny pretty edibles than one giant thing one a plate.
So the menu appealed to me and I really like the varied selection. I opted for 2 tapas options, the crispy squid and the peri peri chicken livers.
The quid was delicious, the right amount of crisp. I barely said a word, once they were in front of me. I couldn’t get them into my mouth quick enough!
The livers also were delicious, creamy, chilly – perfect. The kind of dish where you want to lick the bowl when you are finished.
The Charming Prince opted for the charcoal grilled line fish. “One of the best fish dish's I have ever eaten,” was my Prince’s response to his meal. That’s high praise. I tried a bit and the balance between the smokiness from the charcoal and the lemon butter, wow.
We were also impressed with the freshness of the ingredients, well done to management for making certain that food quality wasn’t compromised over the holidays. The service was also fantastic, prompt and professional. I like the décor, it really is very modern, chic and cosmopolitan. You could shift the restaurant to any destination and it would fit in.
What a welcome addition to Sandton, friendly and professional staff, fuss free and delicious meals. I am already looking forward to trying out the Tuna Taco, on my next visit!
